How To Make Progress With Big Goals

I know the feeling of crossing off a big task from my to-do list. The pressure that builds up from the weight of my checklist adds up at times. If you’re anything like me, staring at a long list can get so overwhelming at times. I learned a secret that helped me to break that cycle. Once I figured out my rhythm, it freed me up to actually see the results I needed so that I could keep going! Today, I’m sharing a piece of my strategy with you to give you a better understanding about what needs to happen so you don’t stay stuck.

1. Break up your ideas into small tasks you can work on daily. This particular step is good for ideas that are larger, and harder to accomplish in a short period of time. Leaving ideas too large can slow down your progress. To avoid having to abandon your ideal goals to accomplish, we suggest breaking your ideas down into smaller action items. We call this sub-goals. Try thinking of your goals in reverse order. Start with your big idea, and think about what might need to be accomplished in order for you to obtain that idea. Repeat this process until you identify an action that you can start as soon as possible.

2. Time block your tasks to make them achievable. When you’ve identified tasks that you can start on as soon as possible, give yourself a deadline for each of them! Designate a set period of time to work on each action item. As you identify how much time you will need to make room for your goals journey, this will help you identify how much time you will need to make room in your commitments to make sure your goals remain achievable.

3. Track and measure how much you’ve completed along the way. Tracking is the simple action of comparing your results from a previous moment or point in time to your results from a more recent point in time. Measuring progress is the means by which you choose to track using data, tools, metrics, resources, people, etc. We’ll get more into tracking in next week’s email!

It is just as important to stay motivated in your journey as it is when you create your goals. Seeing any variation of progress made towards your goals can give you the exact boost you need to keep going. Starting this process of breaking down your ideas into tasks and scheduling them out can help you become more productive and lead you a step closer to your dreams coming true!
